Hair food supplements: when they make sense and how to choose one

You may be interested in a hair food supplement because you notice more hair loss, fragility or less density. Or because you want to look after your hair in the long term, support it through the changes that come with the years and keep it in good condition.

In every case, the question you should ask yourself is a personal one: does it make sense for me, and what can I expect from it?

The answer starts with understanding what your hair is like, how you care for it and what you need to give it. From there, you can assess what a formula provides, how it fits into your diet and what evidence supports choosing it.

Everything I am about to explain, I tell you as a doctor of pharmacy and founder of a company whose food supplements are developed with a team of PhDs in Biomedicine, pharmacists and nutritionists.

Before choosing, think about your hair

Observing what your hair is like, what changes you notice and how you care for it helps you plan its needs over time. You may look for support because you notice more hair loss or fragility, but also because you want to preserve its quality as your age, your diet or your care habits change.

For example, if you have fine hair and start colouring it to cover grey hairs, it is worth thinking about a routine that supports this new stage: caring for the scalp, conditioning and protecting the hair fibre, and checking that your diet covers your needs. Cosmetic care helps preserve the fibre and reduce the damage that colouring can cause. In turn, proper nutrition provides the nutrients the follicle needs to form hair. Attending to both makes long-term care possible.

That is why, within this assessment, a food supplement can have a place when its composition and the evidence behind it justify including it.

Cosmetic and nutritional care can be part of the same plan, with a specific role for each and a recommendation tailored to you.

It is important to describe changes in your hair accurately. More hair falling from the root, progressive thinning and breakage of the fibre are different situations that may need different care. Knowing when they happen and what comes with them helps guide the recommendation.

When can a hair supplement make sense?

Nutritional care plays a role in maintaining hair. Considering a supplement can be part of that care before obvious hair loss appears, as long as there is a specific reason for choosing it. Whether it is right for you depends on your diet, your situation and what the formula can provide. The wish to care for your hair in the long term is the starting point for that assessment.

One clear situation is insufficient intake. If your diet has become more limited or less varied, it may need to be adjusted, and it is worth assessing what should be supplemented. The British Association of Dermatologists considers supplements when the diet is restrictive.

When a professional has diagnosed a deficiency, the correction must match the nutrient and the regimen needed. A general hair supplement may not cover that specific need.

Nutritional support can also be considered before a deficiency becomes established. This is important during GLP-1 treatments, for example: nutritional support makes it possible to review how your diet is changing and decide whether any support is needed. We cover this in our article on Ozempic, Mounjaro and hair loss

What to check on a food supplement label

The composition and the daily amount

Find out which ingredients it contains and how much the recommended daily dose provides. Check whether the amounts refer to one capsule or to all the capsules you need to take each day.
This information allows you to compare formulas and understand what they really provide. The directions on the label must always be followed: the right amount is part of a good recommendation.

What the percentages mean

Nutrient reference values, or NRVs, help you interpret the amount of vitamins and minerals in the product. They are not an individual prescription and should not be confused with upper intake limits.

A higher percentage does not, on its own, mean that a supplement is better for your hair. The amount must be assessed together with your diet and the other products you take.

How the ingredients are identified

For plant extracts, it is useful to know the plant, the part used, the characteristics of the extract and whether it has clinical studies. It is also important to understand how the study was carried out and the information each laboratory can provide, and at the same time to check that the composition, dose and objective are comparable.

How to assess whether the formula suits you

Check whether the supplement explains what you would like to care for or maintain, as well as acting on the changes you have noticed. Remember that having always had fine hair, noticing that it is gradually thinning, or wanting to adapt your care when you start colouring it are different starting points, and some, such as noticing progressive thinning or hair loss that continues over time, are a reason for referral to a specialist doctor.

Tell your pharmacist or doctor about the supplements and medicines you already take. That way they can review your total intake, avoid duplication and check for possible interactions.

Convenience also counts: number of capsules, when to take them, tolerance and daily cost. A regimen that is easy to understand and manageable makes it easier to follow the agreed recommendation.

Food supplement for hair health

Hair Boost within our approach to care

At Modesta Cassinello, the Hair Boost food supplement is part of our approach to caring for hair from within. Its composition brings together amino acids, plant extracts, vitamins and minerals.

Among its nutrients, zinc and selenium contribute to the maintenance of normal hair, copper contributes to normal hair pigmentation and vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. These are claims authorised in the European Union.

It can be considered as part of a long-term care plan, as well as at stages when you notice changes. What guides the recommendation is whether its composition meets your needs and how it fits with the rest of your care.

We can help you understand what Hair Boost provides and how to use it, taking into account your diet, your scalp and the hair fibre. When there is hair loss or thinning that needs a diagnosis, that assessment must be part of the plan.

The choice should include follow-up

Before you start, three things should be clear:

  • What it is meant to provide and why that formula was chosen.
  • How you should take it, following the indicated directions.
  • When to review its use, according to your needs and progress.

Follow-up also makes sense when the goal is to keep your hair in good condition. It allows you to assess tolerance, whether your diet or medication has changed and whether the recommendation is still appropriate.

Continuing should be based on a reason that still applies. If persistent hair loss appears, thinning increases or you notice other changes, it is always worth looking into the cause, as we mentioned above.

Choose with an explanation you can understand

Caring for your hair over time means observing how it changes and adapting the decisions you make about it. A clear label, verifiable information and a personalized recommendation help you assess the place a supplement can have in that care.

The key is to connect what you need with what the formula can provide.
