How to use conditioner correctly
Why it is important to use conditioner
Is it necessary to use conditioner after washing your hair? This is a common question in any hair care routine. When we seek prettier, shinier, softer, and more flowing hair, we tend to focus on shampoo... but what role does conditioner really play? At a time when simplifying steps seems tempting, many people wonder if they can do without this product.
Today we review what conditioner is for, how to apply it correctly, and why it is key if you want healthy, good-looking hair in the long term.
What is the function of a hair conditioner?
The function of hair conditioner is to improve the appearance of hair, which is unruly by nature. Conditioner protects and beautifies hair after washing, restores hydration, detangles hair, prevents split ends, and reduces frizz.

What happens if you don't use conditioner?
If you don't use conditioner, your hair, in addition to being drier and duller, can be unprotected against external factors that impact your hair day after day: solar radiation, pollution. If you also have long hair, it can be difficult to comb, and you can even promote the breakage of the hair fiber, which is now known as "breakage alopecia."
Therefore, the use of conditioner after applying shampoo should not be a negotiable step, neither for lack of time nor for believing that it can make hair dirty faster or reduce volume. And if you are one of those who think that conditioner makes your hair dirty, maybe you haven't found the right one for you.
Although the function of shampoo is to cleanse, many shampoos incorporate conditioning components to leave hair more comfortable. But in most cases, it is not enough because they are also designed for effective cleansing, making the subsequent use of a conditioner key. When you wash your hair, it absorbs water, becomes tense, and more fragile, yet another reason not to forget its application.
Benefits of using conditioner regularly
- Improves hair structure by protecting the hair fiber (keratin and lipids) from within, thus acting against external aggressions, pollution, and UV radiation.
- Prevents split ends by better maintaining hair hydration. This, in addition to being softer and easier to detangle, reacts better to drying, straightening, and styling.
- Adds shine to hair, by improving the structure of the hair fiber and, specifically, the condition of the cuticle. It keeps the cuticle scales compact and cohesive, also acting as a protective shield.
- Improves dreaded frizz by protecting hair lipids. This makes the hair fiber less susceptible to static electricity, also improving combability and shine.
Types of conditioners and when to use them
There are different types of hair conditioners, and each has a specific purpose:
1. Rinse-out conditioner. This is the most common, also called "softener," used after shampoo to soften, detangle hair, and close the cuticle, making hair brighter and more protected.
H04 Conditioner is Modesta Cassinello's rinse-out conditioner, formulated to care for all hair types, from the finest to the driest or most damaged. Its Advanced Formula, improved and innovative, combines a synergy of botanical ingredients, vegetable proteins, biotin, and postbiotic active ingredients that act from the root to improve the health of the hair and scalp.
Thanks to this exclusive combination, H04 provides visible and lasting results from the first applications, restoring hair's strength, density, and vitality. In addition, its light and sensorial texture allows it to also be used as a pre-shampoo treatment on dry hair, offering an extra boost of nutrition and protection before washing. One product, two uses, and one sole purpose: visibly healthier and more cared-for hair.
2. Leave-in conditioner. This type of conditioner is used after washing hair and does not need rinsing. This type of conditioner is very useful for fine, curly hair or as an extra step for any hair type, as some contain active ingredients that, in addition to extra softness, protect against frizz and seal the hair cuticle, increasing shine.
H08 Leave-in Conditioner is Modesta Cassinello's rinse-free conditioner. It is a revitalizing and moisturizing leave-in mist for all hair types. Its active ingredients restore the integrity of the hair fiber, improving frizz and returning to the hair the parameters we always like to observe: resistance, softness, and shine. In turn, it balances the hair's final pH, which is sometimes altered by hard water, chemical treatments, and/or cosmetics.
Website comment H08 Leave-in Conditioner Spray. "I bought the product to refresh my curls. I wasn't sure if it was the right product and I loved it. It moisturizes the hair without weighing it down, without the curls falling, and leaves them loose"
How to apply conditioner step by step
It is used after washing your hair, after carefully removing excess moisture, if you can remove it with a towel, much better, as it makes the hair more receptive.
Apply the conditioner to your hands and distribute it over damp hair, from roots to ends. This conditioner includes very beneficial active ingredients to balance the scalp, but avoid the root area if your hair is fine and/or tends to be oily.
At Modesta Cassinello, we always recommend combing your hair after applying conditioner, because it ensures you distribute it evenly and also facilitates rinsing. We recommend the iBlend brush, a special brush for applying any treatment you use on wet hair, as it deposits the product without sliding it down. Remember that it is important to leave the conditioner on for a few minutes and then rinse well.
H04 Conditioner can also be applied as a pre-shampoo treatment. This trending technique involves applying conditioner a few minutes before washing your hair, on dry hair. Then continue with your care ritual: shampoo and then conditioner, unless your hair is very fine or very oily. You will notice the difference!
5 keys to choosing and using the ideal conditioner
- Choose the right conditioner for your hair type. Observe your hair's needs carefully before choosing. This step is important to prevent the product from reducing volume or giving a feeling of less clean hair, which can happen if you use a conditioner formulated for hair oilier than yours. If you have doubts, we are here to help you.
- Before or after washing? You choose (or combine them). You can use conditioner after washing, as usual, or also before shampoo as a pre-treatment on dry hair, to provide extra nutrition and protection. If you decide to apply it at both times, make sure the shampoo and conditioner are from the same line: their formulas are designed to work in synergy.
- The application method matters, and a lot. Having a good product is not enough: correct application makes all the difference. We will never tire of repeating it. Make sure to distribute it from mid-lengths to ends, with a small massage, and respecting the recommended action time.
- How much conditioner is enough? Follow the principle of elegance: less is more. Apply only the necessary amount, the size of a walnut or hazelnut, depending on the length of your hair. Avoid the root, especially if your scalp tends to be oily.
- Supplement with other treatments if needed. Conditioner fulfills an essential function, but it does not replace other hair treatments. Masks, serums, or oils have different and complementary actions, and will help you keep your hair hydrated, strong, and shiny.

Frequently asked questions about using conditioner
What happens if conditioner is not used?
Hair can lose hydration, tangle more easily, and become more brittle. In addition, it is more exposed to the effects of the sun, heat, or pollution.
Is it recommended to use conditioner on fine or oily hair?
Yes, although it is advisable to choose a light formula and apply it only from mid-lengths to ends, avoiding the root. This maintains balance without adding weight or oiliness.
Can conditioner be applied to dry hair?
Some conditioners can be used as a pre-wash treatment on dry hair. This technique helps reinforce hydration before shampoo, especially for very dry or damaged hair.
Is it advisable to use conditioner every day?
Yes, if you wash your hair daily. Conditioner is formulated to protect, hydrate, and facilitate styling after washing. If you choose a product suitable for your hair type, light, non-greasy, and well-balanced, you can use it daily without risk of weighing down or reducing volume. In fact, for hair that is washed every day, using conditioner is an effective way to keep the hair fiber flexible, soft, and protected against friction or external agents.
